Whine while under load

I just bought an 84 T/A with what I believe is a T5. It was a very good deal but it's got some quirks. One of its previous owners tried turning it into a race car. The shifter lurches forward when I shift into 2nd, perhaps a bad mount. But it whines pretty loud when under load. If I let off the gas just a hair or go down a slight hill, the whine stops. I've looked at some of the past threads...... Is a rebuild in order? I have a T-56 ready to go in but wanted to wait until summer.

sounds like u-joints. and a rebuild on the t5 (or replacing it all together with the t56) sounds like the way to go.
