Re: LT1 5-speed?

A 99 T-5 is going to be for a 6-cyl.

No it will not fit a V8 bell housing.

No a 6-cyl bell housing will not fit a V8.

No the splines are not the same.

Bottom line: No the 99 T-5 won't go in your car.

Sure there's bound to be a way to hack it in there; odds are, by the time you get it done, you will have spent ¾ of the cost of THE RIGHT transmission, but you'll still only have some 6-cyl steaming pile of baboon plop.

The 86 T-5 will be the 1st design. Very eeeeeeezie to tear up with a 305 (I tore up the first 4 or 5 of mine with the ORIGINAL UNMODIFIED 305....) and some people, probably smarter than me, even manage it with a 6-cyl. (I had to have a V8 t do it) Also not a good idea.

Save your money. Do it right. You'll be glad in the long run. Every penny you spend on that other dung, puts you THAT MUCH FARTHER away from the REAL goal, of a reliable, FUN, long-lasting transmission. Keep your money in your pocket until you have enough.

I'm reminded of standing in a parts store that I knew the owner real well one Friday evening about closing time when I was a kid, maybe 20 or so. Skillet walks in, asks for a starter for his 68 Olds or something. D00d tells him, $32. Skillet says, mang, all i gots is $25, sell me dat stahtuh foe $25. D00d says, starter is $32. Skillet pleads and begs, finally picks up about $25 of curb feelers, Playboy bunny mud flaps, and stuff like that, just about $25 worth; empties his wallet, and leaves. Next Friday, I stopped by again. There was Skillet, already there before I got there, begging for a starter for $25 again; mang, I just got paid, all I make is $25, you gotta gimme dat stahtuh. D00d says, starter is $32. Skillet picks up about $25 worth of chrome crap, couple of air fresheners, and other such, and leaves. Now I don't know for sure; but if I was dumb enough to be the betting kind, I'd BET that the next Friday, right before 6, Skillet would have been right back there again, with $25 in his hand, begging for a starter, and instead, buying $25 of useless crap for a car that didn't run.

Moral of the story: don't be Skillet. Be wise with your money. Save it up for the things you want, instead of blowing it on crap that keeps you from EVER getting what you want.

Re: LT1 5-speed?

Yes, the T-10 is a stronger transmission, FWIW.

However, it's even farther from being able to go in your car, unless it's the one out of a 82, and you have EVERY PIECE that goes with it; pedals, crossmember, shifter, Z-bar, "frame" bracket for the Z-bar, bell housing, fork, torque arm bushing, and maybe a few other goodies I'm sure I'm overlooking.

Probably also a detour away from the real goal, I think you can see.

I'm afraid, this is going to be one of those things, where either you want to make it work, or you don't. If you don't, you'll piddle around trying to jerry-rig something, the car won't ever run again, it'll be so hacked up you can't even put it back like it was, and you'll end up selling it in about 2 years at a loss. If you DO, you'll knuckle under, get a 2nd job or something, save the cash, and do what it takes.

At the very least, get a 3rd gen V8 T-5 setup. Even the 86 one is better than nothing. If you always treat it like there's an egg between your right foot and the skinny pedal, and another one at the top of the clutch travel that the pedal will hit if you let it out to suddenly, you can at least drive the car, at least for a little while. That other, no way. Dead-end left turn down a dirt road, off into the weeds, and it'll end up in the lake. Don't go there.

Re: LT1 5-speed?

Might be easiest to watch the tow truck lots and the police impound lot, and catch yourself a wrecked one before it reaches the buzzards. Get a whole car, prolly cost less than piecing it together at the boneyard, and certainly will be a better guarantee that you'll have everything you need.
