Need opinions, Im stuck.

So my rear end decided to shred its self to peices and I am left with the option of either fixing it or going bigger/better.

Where im stuck is what is better for my circumstances. This is where i could use some opinions.

What i have: 9 Bolt Series 2 G80 w/ 2.77's
What I plan to do: i am going to redo the engine eventually, probably a mild 355 build with some high comp. pistons. Shouldn't brake 350 +/- HP (probably a lot less) just something more peppy.

The only thing that concerns me about a 4th gen swap is the over length of the axle by 4 inches... i dont want to use 4th gen wheels (fugly) With that said, i think rebuilding the 9 Bolt is about the only option that fits my wants.

Would i be better off / more satisfied with a series 3 diff in the long run? Advantages/disadvantages?

One more question

I need to know more about cones and remachining them. The drivers side cone looks a lot better than the pass side. However i know nothing. Is this pass. side cone shimmable/machinable??

Sorry you might have to do the confused "Picasso abstract art" head lean to see them.

Drivers side cone:

Passenger side cone:

Does anyone else see any other possibilities?

The 9 bolt should hold up with a mild 350 if you don't abuse it too much. If you have a 2 series now and you think you might want better gears tehn you might check into a rebuilt 3 series from 9bolt.com. Pontiac Posi Rebuilders also might have rebuilt units.

Thanks for the input. I ended up rebuilding the 9 bolt with 3.70's and it's whining something awful.

Re: Need opinions, Im stuck.

If you set the pinion depth, bearing preload and backlash correctly then you will have to live with the noise. The 3.70 gears are not quiet. If you didn't set the pinion depth, bearing preload and backlash correctly then you need to get it right. The gear will probably still make a little noise, but it's usually just in a narrow speed range.
