How much axle play is normal?

I just picked up a 3.23 posi disc brake rear out of a 1991 GTA.

The previous owner pulled the caliper bracket off one side (and lost it!). The backing plate bolts were also removed. I can only assume he was going to pull the axle out because the seal looks to be leaking.

I won't be able to pull it apart until the weekend, but can anyone tell me how much up and down play is normal for these 10 bolts?

I checked for up/down play onboth sides of this axle with the exact same axle on my 91 Formula and they all felt comparable. Just looking for some opinions, really.

Interesting; because on that rear, you can't get the backing plate off with the axle in place.

Sounds like somebody took something apart and found something they didn't like, and now it's your problem.

CHECK IT OVER CAREFULLY!!!! I seriously doubt that you'll be able to replace the backing plate and that alone will lead to a working rear.

There should be around .100" of in-out play in the axle, and basically zero in any otehr direction.

OOPS - I've been reading up on rear end stuff so much today that I used the wrong word - I didn't mean backing plate, I meant caliper bracket. Sorry 'bout that. The backing plate was unbolted, but not removed. The rear diff hasn't been off in a while as evidenced by the dirt/gunk all around it.

I'm fairly certain the rear itself is ok, but that play in each side of the axles has me a little nervous.... Its a very small amount, but its noticeable - I'll try to take a video. Plus, I still have to find a damn caliper bracket.
