What pilot should I use? Bearing, bushing??

Just wondering what the best bearing or bushing is to use on my street driven 700HP F1 Procharged + T-56 + Moser 12 bolt setup is?

Some people say bushing, less parts that can fail.

Some say bearing, less friction and better life.

My last bearing that came with my SPEC stage 3 was TOSTE after 5K miles.

Not sure if it was my foult or not, but it was dead as dead can be. Makes me want a bushing.

Thoughts?

Also where would you order it from?

Thanks for any help.

nothing wrong with a cheap replacement bronze bushing.

RAM offers a kevlar bushing. It's supposed to be nearly indestructable... definitely overkill for a stock set-up, but with the power your combo is making, you might want to consider it. It's very expensive for a bushing, but considering the investment you've got there, in the grand scheme of things, maybe it's not so expensive.

Re: What pilot should I use? Bearing, bushing??

I've ran both at one time or another. I have a bearing in it now. I'm kinda suprised that if the bearing you ran for that 5K miles seized, it didn't screw the shaft up....

I doubt thre's much friction there anyhow. Good thing about a bronze bushing is that it won't hurt the shaft if it's misaligned or anything. I'll most likely switch back a bronze bushing myself if I I have a reason to pull the tranny - and if I can manage to get the old bearing out...that sucker didn't go in easy as I recall...

EDIT: You can get the bushing at any local auto parts store...

I called pepboys, autozone and napa they all said I need to special order it from the warehouse. Seems like something I would have thought they would have in stock.

Are there multiple people that sell the kevlar one?

I am a mechanical engineer and have used kevlar on work application so this option iterestes me.

Hard to go with the $53 when the bronze one is $5, lol.

Still on the wall as what to do.

The last bushing I purchased, IIRC, was in off my dealership's shelf.

I've used both as well and currently have the Autozone bronze pilot bushing in there.

Summit sells the kevlar bushing, but I'd think it can be purchased/ordered from most places that sell RAM products.

As for the price, compared to the 5-figures invested in a powertrain, $53 dollars would seem like 53 cents... but maybe that's just me.

It was just a suggestion, seeing that it's an alternative in the bearing/bushing market that many people probably weren't aware of. And it's nice to know all the options before making a decision.

Edit: After searching the net, I've found kevlar bushings by Zoom and Speedway Motors, ranging in price from $39-$48, as well as the RAM bushing sold by Summit. Summit seems to be the most expensive place, even more than buying RAM's directly from RAM.

I noticed recently that Napa shows the kevlar bushing in their website parts listing for a bit less.

Re: What pilot should I use? Bearing, bushing??

Hmmm. Interesting.

I think I will stick with brass bushing. No point in trying something so new right now. I have spent a lot of money on my power train, that is true. But since I have, that doesn't mean I have enough to keep spending all the time. I have to save money where I can, thats how I ended up with the motor that I have.

-Free block
-Re-used crank
-Re-used connecting rods
-Re-used heads
-Ebay bought intake
-used F1 found on racingjunk.com from a crazy guy, that sold the entire setup with $2900 when the head unit alone sells for $4900. Said he didn't like it and wanted to go twin turbo. Clearly didn't need the money.
-Etc...

Anyways, I am rambling on about nothing, I just need to order that damn bushing so I can finish my build and send out my carb.

Thanks for the help everyone. Once I rebuild my tranny with TICK, then I will get that bad *** bushing

I never had a problem with my bearing one over the years even with a ton of trips down the track it makes sence to me with your power level a solid bushing would work better.
