Speedometer Cable Question
Speedometer Cable Question
ok, i have a 1983 camaro Z28, i have gutted alot of the useless crap i dont want/need out of the car, AC, cruse control, ect,
i have the duel needle 85mph speedometer, with the 2 piece speedometer cable transducer for the cruse control that is not there anymore, well i dont like the look of the gutted transducer on that bracket, and im wondering if i can get a one piece speedometer cable from an 84~+ car, i see the cable for 15~25$ and would like to replace it,
now heres the part im wondering apart..... that transducer has (what i would guess by how close the input and output is) a 1:1 gear ratio to the speedometer, but 2 gears together input will have a reverse output, so accentually will my speedometer spin backwards?
also i am replacing the 700R4 with a TH350, did they reverse the speedo worm gear in the tailshaft to spin backwards for the transducers gear swapping
i been puzzling this all day, and really want a single cable like my 79 camaro has,
thanks

Re: Speedometer Cable Question
No, the cable spins the same way.
No all the speedo gears are all the same. http://www.transmissioncenter.net/sp...n_______va.htm Go here for a good selection.

Re: Speedometer Cable Question
but the transducer will reverse the direction i thought
Input 1 clockwise
output 1 counter clockwise, but if anyone has ever done this before i will definitely take your word for it.

Re: Speedometer Cable Question
Not sure about "arm" and "flipping" and all that; but I can assure you, the cables are all the same, the speedo gears are all the same, and the speedos themselves are all the same. Everything turns the same direction.
Don't worry about what you "thought"; the parts won't respond to it.
Just go with what IS.

kk man and what the arm thing was to see how the rotation changes perspectives from degrees of rotation, the same thing happens with the gears, it reverses directions, it was just kind of interesting when i tested that theory.

Re: Speedometer Cable Question
I can sell you a custom reverse rotation speedometer cable for a mild core charge.
Or you can just get one for an 85 Camaro (which no longer used a cruise transducer in-line with the speedo cable since it used a VSS at the back of the speedo head for cruise and ECM VSS signal.)

Re: Speedometer Cable Question
No need... the cable always turns the same way, regardless. Specifically, the direction the speedo pointer moves. Look at how one works and it will be obvious.
The cars (like mine, 83) with the in-line cruise transducer, also used the little yellow box on the back of the speedo (like mine), that optically "looks" into the cluster at the spinning U-shaped magnet thing that the cable drives, to generate pulses. That's how the ECM knows how fast the car is going, although in mine (manual trans) it doesn't do a whole lot with that, unlike the auto cars, which use it for TCC.
My 83 car, with the in-line cruise transducer still installed and operating quite nicely thank you, works just fine with the dash out of about a 87 IROC in it right now and a T-56 with the gear converted extension housing. 140 mph speedo. That double pointer ludicrous thing finally barfed me out one time too many.
All the cables turn the same way. All the gears turn the same way. All the speedos turn the same way. The same the same the same the same. Don't outsmart yourself with arms and flipping and whatever all else, just hook it up and see what happens.
All you need to do is go to that link, scroll down to the bottom, and buy a cable with threads at one end and the push-in at the other; of a suitable length for these cars which I don't know offhand what that is, you'll have to measure it. Figure on about 18" or so longer than whatever your "lower" cable is now, should do the trick.

Re: Speedometer Cable Question
kk lol sometimes i like to think how things work and then i get all dumb and stuff over thinking it, hahaha, well kk guys ill be buying a new cable asap when i get a paycheck,
by the way this camaro is replacing my 1979 camaro for now, so it will resemble what options came with a second gen camaro, like no cruse control carbed ect.... these cars are my performance cars, they just need to be fast fun and functional, i dont need extra weight or computer controlled crap,
i have a 1998 firebird to not use my AC and not use my cruse control on, so im ok with gutting the options out of my 83,
