"Rubbery" gear selector, can't get 1st nor park, 4 speed auto

Hi guys, I got an 89 350 with an auto tranny (obviously in it). Tranny is the thing that I know the least about so here I am.

Last time I drove it and tried to park it I couldn't get it in park. The shifter started feeling like it was connected to something made out of rubber (I don't know how to describe it any better).

If I pull the shifter to the rear from "P" then all the gears are one off. So if I put it in Reverse it's still in Park (if I get lucky and get it in Park in the first place).
If I put it in Neutral it engages Reverse, If in Drive it goes to Neutral and so on. I can't get it to stick in the first or "L" cause obiously I would have to pull it further then it goes. Same thing going backwards, when I stop driving and put it in Neutral it stays in OD, Reverse goes to Neutral and Park engages Reverse.

If I try many times I may get it in park. Good thing my car is not my daily driver but I need it fixed as my daily driver my die any day now and I'll be stuck.

Any ideas? Many thanks in advance for any help.

And please please .... do yourself a huge favor ... get a cable from the dealership!

I know, it costs twice as much - and might take a few days to order ... but no one has ever had an aftermarket shifter cable last longer than about 2 weeks - the aftermarket ones are all JUNK!!!

Simular but different question. Mine when I put it into park, still stays in reverse, but all other gears work fine. I recently ran all my rca cables under the console, could that effect it??
