Hard Shifts Cold; Smooth Shifts Warm

Hi, I have a 305 700R AT which shifted hard between 1st and 2nd when it is cold, however when it warms up, the hard shift between 1st and 2nd becomes smoother to smooth.

Throttle Body Cable was adjusted by mechanic, and got worse, now it shifts real hard. Throttle Body Cable is said to be okay. Provided copy of throttle body cable adjustment procedure to mechanic to make sure he understood it, and it was adjusted again. Still a real hard shift from 1st to 2nd.

Does anybody know what's going on with my AT from those symptons?

Richard.

Why dont you to take it to a transmission technician instead of a mechanic. That what I would do. its possible a valve is too tight when it is cold and as it warms up it gets loooser which equals the hard then softer. I dont know how likely that is. I would take it to a KNOWN GOOD trans. tech and see what they say.

Thanks for the advice. The mechanic is at a Transmission service center, but I don't have confidence the mechanic is that good. I'll talk with the service center owner and see what's up.

What valve are you referring to? Richard.

Did you ever find out what it was? Mine is doing the exact same thing.. and it's the same tranny with a 305 TBI. Don't quite understand it and I am on a tight budget.

That is the same as mine, a 305 TBI, and it shifts smoother when I accelerate more aggresively, but I have not had time to go to the transmission shop.

Keep posted. Richard

Re: Hard Shifts Cold; Smooth Shifts Warm

Mine does this as well although I have the 3.1 700r4. Once its warm it shifts great. I put some Lucas in it and it worked good for about two days then went back to the same. I havent had a chance to take it to trans shop yet. Got a lot of other small things Im working on. Keep us informed to what you find.

Re: Hard Shifts Cold; Smooth Shifts Warm

Will do, and there is no doubt warmer weather the AT works much better, even normal.

TV valve may be the problem as the tranny shop adjusted and checked out the TV cable.

Re: Hard Shifts Cold; Smooth Shifts Warm

only when it is warm, and not always, I think it has to do with the TV cable and valve setup, since a slow acceleration hardshifts cold. I haven't had it sorted out yet, just working through it.

How hard is hard? Is it firm, or a "bam"? My 86 is firmer when cold, but softens up a bit when warm, and it's normal.

Normal? Whatever happened to the GM smooth AT shifting? This hardshifts so hard, what I thought, at first, was tire chirps, now, I believe are transmission chirps!

It's hard for me to tell, because I am deaf in my right ear, and unable to tell direction of sound sources.

What makes you think that hard shift is normal? Slow acceleration, hard shift, aggressive acceleration, hard to call it a hard shift.

Yes warmer does work a lot better than cold, but really? the 700R is supposed to shift hard when it is cold?

Re: Hard Shifts Cold; Smooth Shifts Warm

That's too hard for a stocker, even with the tv cable pulled tight. I'd take it to a tranny shop at this point. Could be a valve in the transmission.

What do you mean by pulled tight? What transmission valve?

I am no mechanic.

There is an adjustment for the TV (throttle valve) cable. The tighter the cable the higher the trans pressure will be, hence the harder the shift will be.

Google how to adjust the cable. It is really easy. You should be able to shift into 1st from 2nd automatically when you punch it to the floor. If this doesn't happen, you need to put more tension on it by pulling it back a bit.

Re: Hard Shifts Cold; Smooth Shifts Warm

You need to google this. I would start by going in a notch. The cable can be adjusted by pulling it in or out. There is a detent you push with a screw driver. That allows you to adjust in or out. I'm just not explaining this as good as the directions say. It is quite easy. In would allow it to shift sooner, and the shifts will soften up.

Here's an other one.

Your tv cable could be the issue, or you may have some other troubles.

Thee TV cable check out fine, but it was adjusted too tight, so we backed it off a bit, and the ride home was pretty good. Tomorrow morning on my trip to the liquor store, I will see what it is like when it is cold, although the car sat for a couple of hours before the TV adjustment was backed off. Will confirm my findings tomorrow.

I followed the two links, printed out the 700R4 adjustment info, and gave it to the transmission service owner. Did not seem to know how to adjust the 700R4 for a smooth shifting drive.
