700r4

I currently have a 1984 Z28 305 v8 5.0 H.O. The vehicle is carbureted with an automatic transmission. The front seal on the tranny is severely cracked and is leaking large amounts of transmission fluid. I was going to replace the seal but i heard there is a high chance that it would crack again. Im thi king of going with a 700r4 transmission but cant seem to find one at local retail autostores like autozone or kragen. Where can i find this tranny in SF bay area California? And what are the benefits of going with a 700r4? Would i have to replace any other parts to accomodate the change? Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Re: 700r4

I just bought it from a private seller. It might be stock 700r4. The reason i dont think i is is because when im on the highway it wont pass 4500 rpms. Idk if this means that it is stock 700r4 and is just messed up after 27 years or if it was previously fitted with a lower end transmission.

Re: 700r4

you might need to have it rebuild.. but if ou have 4 gears your more then likely running a 700r4.. if its 3 then a turbo tranny is probably in there.. i mean dont qoute me.. i could be wrong but thats more then likely the problem...those trannysare good but after 27 years.. it just might need rebuilt

Re: 700r4

What is cracked exactly? The seal and bushing can be replaced on a 1984 unit from the front without taking the pump out. Install a teflon bushing only and a new seal this should fix it for quite awhile. The later seals do not need any added seal installer.
