drift proofing c clip axels

ok i did some searching i didnt come up with what i was looking for, so: right now i am running a welded diff, i will be swapping in a spool soon, and want to make sure im not going to have any surprises mid drift with a c clip gone rouge or something. durability and reliably are my priorities here. what can i do to drift proof my OE axels in a spool and factory 7.5 10 bolt. my 305 is stock for now, i am am looking to build a 300hp 350tq min 350 in a year or
thanks

Re: drift proofing c clip axels

1. remove 10 bolt
2. trash it
3. buy moser 9" or 12bolt rear
4., and no issues with crappy c-clips.

seriously, im not being a smart ***. its the only way to remove that issue from a 10 bolt. Only available option are the c-clip eliminators, but they are for drag cars and not rated for lateral loading.

or pick up a 9 bolt, but parts are getting hard to find.

Re: drift proofing c clip axels

really? damn, that is not what i wanted to hear.
is losing a c clip a catastrophic failure, like destroying the whole rear end, or will a axel just go sliding out of the rear end into the middle of the track or what?
it a c clip failure a "if" it happens or a "when" it happens?

Like a low budget off roader who doesn't care about taking stuff back apart.

A few tack welds will stop them from falling out on their own.

Re: drift proofing c clip axels

Drifting with welded gears??!!??
How long have you done that? I've always heard dirt cars doing it, but
heard street cars eat 'em or toss an axel.

Re: drift proofing c clip axels

gumby, thats what i needed man. thanks. anyone have a good close up of the c clips and where i would need to tack them?

havoc, the majority of amateur drifters run welded diffs. yeah sometimes they grenade, but most of those guys can swap out the whole pumpkin very easily in cars like a 240sx. the most ware really just comes in parking lots and turning at full lock. but im also running a 50 - 60 tall tires so that helps.

no real science to it, you can decie to do a quick zap that might let you cut them lose later, or burn em into one piece.

making sure the part is clean will help a quick zap, oil will wick up to heat.

Re: drift proofing c clip axels

ok, my housing and axel tubes are 6hk, them from an '88. but the guts appear to be original because they are 28 spline, and i know this rear has been opened up before because she it rocking timkin bearings. anyway, i broke the original welds. the guy got zero penetration.

the welds just popped off the spider gears and it went back to being an open.
i had it rewelded properly

and the c clips in the newer axels are recessed into the spider gears with the pin keeping them that way. no way they are coming out.

the rounds bit protruding from the spider gears contacting the pin are the ends of the axels. the c clips are recessed completely.

hopefully this will help someone else at somepoint

Re: drift proofing c clip axels

This thread has my curiosity up. How are C-Clip axles retained with a spool ?

C-clips can break during lateral loads?

Re: drift proofing c clip axels

loving the red neck posi/spool!!!!

Even tho the c clips are recesed they still can be a prob. The end of the axles can break off and or the clips can break and fall out.
You could also use disk brakes to help in your axle holding quest, not the safest but the caliper and rotor kinda help hold the axle in place incase of axle/flange failure during your championship chasing runs..
You could also buy a replacement axle for your aplication and it'll help a bit..
use a quality wheel stud also..

agreed! haha thats what i plan on doing with my ta, but dang c clips really come off like that? guys around here do donuts 24/7 with thier 3rd and 4th gens and the most that happens with thier big ol goffy rims is they snap the axle becuase to much wheel hop.
