T700 tranny questions

First of all, what's crackin, guys? I'm a 4th gen guy trying to help out one of your fellow 3rd genners and could use a bit of assistance!

So I'm trying to help out a girl I know with her car, an 84 z28 with a 305 and a blown T700 tranny, which to be honest I didn't know existed before tonight. When she said T700 I figured she meant 700R4. What is the difference between a T700 and a 700R4? Would a 700R4 be a direct swap/would there be a major benefit to it? I'd appreciate basically any help because this one truthfully has me a bit confused.

EDIT: I saw somewhere that the full name of the 700R is TH700-R4, so is t700 just another short version of the name like 700r? pardon the dumb thread. If they are the same, I know the later (87+ I think?) versions were improved over the earlier ones. Could those same improvements be incorporated into a rebuild or would it be advisable to just get an 87+ tranny?
