Gear Ratios, Strength of 10 Bolt for Street Use
Gear Ratios, Strength of 10 Bolt for Street Use
We are putting together my friends 91 Trans Am which has a 383 carbureted, small street supercharger and T 56. The motor realistically will running about 6000 rpm. It has Dart Iron Eagle 2.05 valve heads.
He is not worried about gas mileage whatsoever and with the 6 speed should top end fairly well regardless. The car has an MSD, adjustable timing computer etc.
I had a 10 bolt in my 85 Camaro and went in the 12s and never broke the rear end, His Trans Am will rarely if ever be drag raced and simply be driven on the street.
The car has a 2:73 drum brake posi in it now, that someone swapped in and we just for a 3:73 built 10 bolt from a friend for free which has an Auburn unit all new bearings etc. It is also a drum brake rear so we are thinking about taking the guts out, maybe throw 4:56 in it and throw it into a disc brake housing.
Anyone here running 4:10s or 4:56's?
Anyone have any issues with running a 10 bolt with a pretty stout motor?
Thanks, Tim

I've a strong 355 and T56 with a 4.56:1 10 bolt with Richmond gears, LS1 brakes, and an adjustable proportioning valve. Holds up just fine.
