opinon of a th 400 trans
im putting together a 86 z28 which didnt come with a drivetrain and the car had a 700r4 trans in it before. i have a vortec motor that im rebuilding and i have a short tail shaft th400 with a the u joint style yoke on the end of the transmission. im thinking of running this transmission in the car but wanted some insight on this transmission and will it be ok to run the u joint style yoke or have it swapped out for a normal yoke. ill have the transmission rebuilt before its all gose to gether in the car, only reason for the th 400 instead of a 700r4 or t5 swap is they are hard to find and i been looking for some time. also i have 373 gears in the rear.

You're gonna hate 3.73:1 with no overdrive. The 700R-4 doesn't have to be from an '83-'92 F-body. Just by changing the tailhousing, you can use the 700R-4 from any SBC RWD application, from 'vettes to pickups to Caprices.
Finding the F-car tailhousings is easy, I have 5 of them right now myself.
You can also swap in a 200-4R with less work than that TH400. There's no arguing the TH400's inherent strength, but for your build it just isn't needed.
200-4Rs were found in Monte Carlos through '88, and as with 700R-4s, later is better.
