1984 Transmission and Rear end Swap.

I just picked up a 84 Z28 with 43K miles. The engine is basically spotless and runs like a clock. The transmission the OD does not work and it makes noise. The rear end also grinds and "skips" when I accelerate hard.

I have another parts car...same 84 Z28 with a rebuilt trans about 10K miles ago.

When I swap out the Trans and Differentail out of this car, should I also use the parts car driveshaft.

This should be a simple drop out and bolt on...correct.

Sounds more like a 143000 and not a 43000 mile car. Reasons: Five digit odometer and the tranny & rear should not be shot if it was a low mileage car. Good luck.

No actaully it is documented with the original bill of sale, window sticker, and the gentlemans I purchased it from still lives at the same address, with the same phone number as the original invoice.

No one said anythign about a five digt odometer.

But, thanks for the constructive response to my question.

Welcome to TGO, SteveO84. If both transmissions are 700R4s, you'll find that the drive shafts are identical. If not, you still have the OE shaft which would be a bolt-up. One way or another, it should be a simple swap.

Re: 1984 Transmission and Rear end Swap.

Ok...to be honest, I have never pulled an AT. How can I tell if they are both 700R4's.

Also how can I tell what rear end I have. When I light it up, both tires leave rubber. When I turn a corner the rear end seems to "skip."

Thanks for helping a rookie

Both cars are 84 Z28 with the 305.

Re: 1984 Transmission and Rear end Swap.

changing to new correct gear oil with the GM limited slip additive may help the rear skip less.

If the tailhousings are both 6" with torque arm provisions (lateral holes for bolts) and the transmissions are both the same length, they're both 700-r4s.

Re: 1984 Transmission and Rear end Swap.

Thank you I will check tongiht.

I have never owned a limited slip rear end so I really do not know what is normal. I will change the fluid and see what happens.

If a limited slip rear end is functioning correctly, will there be a "noise or screech" upon hard acceleration?

Thank you for your help.

Re: 1984 Transmission and Rear end Swap. INTIMINATED

Ok guys,

I am a bit intiminated to tackle this. Not sure why, never messed with trannys.

I am pretty mecahnical, some of the projects I have done in the past; remove/replace entire front end in 4x4, replace rear end in old T-Bird, all my brake work, basically mid level projects.

My donor car and my car are identical...do you think this is something a guy with limited experience can tackle?

Re: 1984 Transmission and Rear end Swap.

Sure. They're heavy and they leak. The lines on the side are annoying to remove but not really any different than the brake lines you've pulled on a rear before. Weighs less than a rear housing. which you've done. Hold a 6pt wrench perpendicular to the radius of the tq. converter to get those 3 bolts loose. Long extension(s) for the bellhousing bolts. The rest is cake.
