rear diff fluid change ?
Hey everyone I have an 89 camaro rs I wanted to change the rear diff fluid and wanted to know which one fluid to use. My car doesn't have posi trac and the car has 354,000 mile on the odameter
Re: rear diff fluid change ?
are you closer to Wal Mart or to an auto parts store. If Wal Mart, then use their lower priced brand. If auto parts store, then use their lowest price brand. it's just 80-90w. if you don't have a pump, you'll need 3 bottles of the squirt stuff because you can't get the whole bottle in.
you'll need to decide if you want to use rtv as gasket material or an actual diff gasket.
I use both
tools needed
3/8 inch ratchet handle for taking off the fill plug
sockets for removing the cover bolts
scraper for scraping the old gasket
rtv
new gasket
3 bottles of gear oil
drive on ramps
15 minutes to do the job, 20 if you include getting the car on/off the ramps

Thanks for the help.
What's rtv?
Why do I have to take off the diff cover it doesn't have a drain plug?

The "gel"-like gasket maker stuff that squeezes out of a tube.

No rear end covers have a drain plug. Some covers have fill plugs in them (9-bolt covers & aftermarket 10-bolt covers), but none have drain plugs.

real time video
road to victory
just kidding
it stands for room temperature vulcanizing
all that we really care is that it hardens after xx period of time without being heated to cure.
to get the diff oil to drain you must remove the diff cover.
to refill the diff you need to be sure that the fill/inspection plug can be removed and is not rounded
sooooooo, and since you are apparently new to this I will type it because common sense says to do this first but I want to be sure
step 1 (after it's on ramps)- make sure that you can remove the inspection/fill plug If you can't, then stop right there and take it to someone. Don't open the cover just to find out later that you can't refill the diff. That would mean a flat bed tow and a frown upon your face
