Re: 91 RS automatic
700r-5
lol... kidding...
i read somewhere that it was something different that was a precursor to the 4L60 , but wasn't a 700R4, and it was matched specifically to the TBI motors prior to TPI or some crap......
but now i cant find the article, and don't remember what they called it, so figured i'd ask the forum..

Re: 91 RS automatic
At some point GM renamed the 700R4 as the 4L60 (no E).
Regardless you should only ever mess with it long enough to get the car back to your shop where you can remove it and install a proper transmission.
That last bit may be hyperbole on my part.

Re: 91 RS automatic
makes sense....
then the E was hooked up to the LT1's and LS1's .. or.... the LS1's for sure, or the T56 for manual
... just curious, what do you consider a proper transmission?
friend of mine swears by Turbo 400's.. He hooked one up to his LT1, got everything to work on it somehow....
i personally like the T-56 though... not saying that they are rated for ANY kind of power, but.... i really liked having a 6 speed. the synchro's go out on them far too easily.... that's the only real issue with them at below 400hp.
i've always felt lazy driving an auto... lol

Re: 91 RS automatic
well since we're the only one's on this thread, i'll change the subject...
i know people put ratchet style shifters on these cars...
my whole life, when racing an automatic car, i've slammed it into 1st and went through the gears manually, and everyone else i've seen does that too...
and i think to some extent gm made these transmissions with the understanding that people WOULD do that, but,
most people say that's bad for the transmission....
is that true or false?
i've never blown a transmission doing that personally...
long story short, i'm thinking about getting a paddle shifter.... (strictly for the cool factor) which explains why i was wondering what model etc
