Does this look right?
Okay, a few dumb questions:
I've taken apart my center console to replace my hand brake. While it is off, I decided to take a look at my shifter. When I removed the shifter mechanism, I saw what you see in the picture.
Is that how it's supposed to look? It seems to me like there should be more oil inside, but then again, I don't know much about transmissions.
Question 2: Does the shifter rod just unscrew from the base? I want to repaint it, and it would be easier if I could just take the thing apart. I'll add another attatchment of what I'm talking about.
Thanks in advance

Re: Does this look right?
The fill plug is much lower on the case. So, the shifter area won't be filled at any time unless maybe you're going up quite a parking ramp.
Yes.

Yes.

Yes it will unscrew?
Because I was twisting pretty hard, and it wouldn't turn. I want to get the smaller rubber boot off the shifter so I can clean it, but there's no way to get it off without removing the metal shaft.
Thanks

Yes the stock F-body and S10 T5 shifter handles unthread.
Put heater or radiator hose over it (if you care about it's appearance) and use a pipe wrench.
Or you could try two M16x1.5 nuts backed against each other in place of the **** and use a wrench to back it off.
