Will this ring gear set work with this carrier?

I have two rear ends, one of which is currently in the car.
92 RS - 3.08 (in car, stock)
95 Z28 - 2.73 (just bought for $200, 80k miles)

... I don't want to down grade to 2.73, and as far as I know, there are two different types of carriers, series 2, and series 3.
Series 3 being 3.23 and up from the factory, and 3.08 and lower had series 2 carriers.

So......can I swap the ring gear/pinion sets between the two carriers? That way I have 3.08 lsd?

I want to know the answer, but it just seems like a lot of work for a 3.08lsd lol. Better off selling both rear ends and buying a 3.42 lsd

Thanks

Although I never recommend it, you can buy a spacer that allows you to put a series 3 ring gear on a series 2 carrier. They're about $50 from Jegs or Summit.

Posi's don't last forever. Your 92's may be worn or worn out. Although it probably could be rebuilt, doing a rebuild, spacer etc may be slightly less than just buying a new and better posi in a series 3 with 28 splines.

Re: Will this ring gear set work with this carrier?

THey're both 2 series.

Yes the 3.08 will work on the carrier that now has 2.73 (not 2.72) on it.

FYI: the ratio is ALWAYS one WHOLE number (teeth on the ring) divided by another (teeth on the pinion). Not possible to have a gear ratio that isn't the ratio between 2 integers. Almost always, at least one of the #s is prime. In the case of 3.08, it's 40 on the ring and 13 on the pinion; 2.73 is 41 & 15.

That'd be my conclusion.

Right:

As usual, just because "it'll work" doesn't automatically mean "it's a good idea".

You'll be spending A BUNCH of time and money on it; that's a whole lotta maze with very little cheeeeeeeze at the end.
