Clunking when coasting
I have a 90 GTA that is making a nasty clunking sound when i let off the gas pedal or coast down a hill.( clunking sometimes faster depending on my speed.) Does not make any clunking noise when excelerating.
I was thinking U joints.
A little play at the front joint & ( Yoke seems to have a little play in the tranny ) Torque arm is sturdy. Was thinking could also be an issue in the rear end. Priced a set of Fed Mogul/precision u joints. I also have a torsion series 3 carrier w/3.42 gears in the basement for it.
Any ideas?
*I can do the u joints quickly. The rearend i was gonna do in the spring.
Thanks

What kind of play does the yoke have at the trans.? It will spin a little? Or it will wobble left/right/up/down? If the latter, when you service the driveline pull the tailhousing too so you can put a new bushing in.
Spicer joints are good. For a not-hard-launched car that gets driven, ones with grease zerks are fine.
Might as well do the joints now since you've verified some play and see if you can get to spring w/ the rear. Thumbs up on the Torsen.

Re: Clunking when coasting
I had the car in neutral, grabbed the front (yoke) it had a little updown movement and it made a light clunking sound. Looked at the tranny as i did this and the tranny also seemed to lift up a bit as well. So i'm going to change tranny mount also. I really worry when i hear that Clunk, clunk, clunk whenever i let up on the pedal .. (I'm really looking forward to swapping in the torsen and 3.42's)
Thanks for your response.

If the trans mount is busted it will usually hop during a hard shift, you can try to move it with a pry bar as well and see. Sometimes you can go between reverse and drive with the brake on and the car running to hear where the clunking from U joints would be coming.
