Transmission Shifts down at 112mph. Whats the deal?

I am currently running a 1992 camaro rs with a 305 and a stock 700R4 automatic tranny. The issue that I am currently encountering is that my transmission will shift down at highspeeds. usually just after I hit 112mph, my engine cruisin' at a solid 3500 rpms decides to shift down and redline no matter how casually I accelerate. I am afraid of blowin the engine if this occurs. Could this possibly be the speed limiter kickin in to slow the car. If so I will promptly install a VSS toggle switch.
I'm just hoping that it isn't a transmission issue as this is my daily driver. Can't really afford down time.
On another note, if the transmission is scrapped, how much would it cost to convert it to 6-speed manual transmission, and what type would fit?
Any input is appreciated! Thanks everyone!

LOL brings back memories - That is what the dealer said to me in my V8 SHO. I had an issue at 115 the speedo would just all of a sudden go to 0 but the car would keep pulling to 144 when the limiter kicked in. Took it in under warranty and the response was - You shouldn't be driving that fast!

haha thats a good piece of advice! unfortunately I live in the *** crack of no where and we like close of some rural roads and race what we've got. Would hate to see the tail lights of a civic or s10. that and when i have enough cash to drop a 383 in I will have to disable the limiter before it hits maple grove.

You sure it is really downshifting? Or is it just the Speed Limiter kicking in & feeling like a downshift?

If you bypass the Speed Limiter & you would know for sure. But I bet it is just the Speed Limiter kicking in. 112 in Drive & the RPMs should cause the engine engine parts to become external parts!

It may be the limiter. It is just concerning when the rpm needle smacks the peg in the red. If it is just the limiter then that is perfect. The car jerks quite hard and i have always let off the throttle to preserve my wallet lol.

If your RPMs jump, it ain't the Speed Limiter. Speed Limiter gives a big bog feeling as the car slows suddenly, shifting you forward in your seat, no RPM rise. I learned about it the hard way in my 1st 3rd gen. 92 RS TBI/305/T5

Re: Transmission Shifts down at 112mph. Whats the deal?

4th gear is a valve issue.

https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...-kickdown.html

6 speed swap is a read the sticky issue.
Finding someone parting a complete 93-97 6 speed car so you can get all the manual parts is a good way to go vs. buying a trans., then trying to round it all up. With your time/labor and used parts, it can be done under $2000.

Re: Transmission Shifts down at 112mph. Whats the deal?

Thats some good input. i defintely am shifted forward in the seat and dont know if rapid deceleration is from me letting off the throttle immediatly or from the limiter. Sure gets loud as hell though. If it is truely a valve issue, doesnt that mean i have to rebuild the tranny? Good idea, never considered parting a newer model. I found a complete set for a 6-speed to match my engine and gearing, still waiting for the quote. I'm sure it'll be an arm and a leg.

they do sell pieces to help with high speed downshifting. it lets you get 85% into throttle instead of 50%? jegs, summit. look for it and you shall find

Re: Transmission Shifts down at 112mph. Whats the deal?

what do you guys think about the T56 as a good ol' 6-speed manual transmission from American Power Train? It is an automatic to manual conversion kit. I might pair it with their 460hp 383 stroker crate motor
