Stock 9 bolt 1987
What can a stock 9 bolt in a 87 Trans am deal with as far as power im looking at 350-400hp
and I would rather not blow up the axle.
also are there axle shaft and gear upgrades that would let the stock 9 bolt housing deal with it

Re: Stock 9 bolt 1987
I was using a stock 3.27 gear 9 bolt and it was pushing me into the very high 11's at 117 mph with an estimated 500hp. I swapped in a 10 bolt after that for better and cheaper aftermarket options and went into the low 11's before finally switching to a 9" and a transbrake at the same time.

pretty much same here. i was launching with 26x10 slicks and a small shot, and running 11's with a stock 3:45.
there are a few gear options, not many but a few. Gear selection will depend on what series carrier you have.
the biggest upgrade out there is the TA Performance girdle.
im swapping mine out also .Ill be putting it in my wifes vert. no sense in dstroying a perfectly working rear. im going to a bigger tire, more hp/tq, and a bigger shot. with hopes on finishing a fogger motor by late next year.
