Re: How to know the gear ratio
Remove the cover and count the teeth on the ring and the pinion. Any swap requires new oil anyway.

Or an easier way...remove the diff cover and look for the stamping on the RING gear. You might have to remove some grease to see it clearly, but it's there.

Check the 10-Bolt FAQ sticky above for ring and pinion numbers and their gear ratios.

Re: How to know the gear ratio
The easiest way is NOT to the remove the cover....
The easiest way is to determine whether or not it's posi....
If it is posi, both wheels will spin the same way when you turn the rear wheel.
If they move in opposite directions, the posi is blown, or is an open-diff.
If it's posi, turn one wheel, one full revolution (360 deg), and count approx how many times the drive shaft spins. 3 spins (almost even) most likely is 3.08, 3 and 1/4 spin is approx 3.23, etc.
If it's not a posi, (open dif) then spin the wheel two times, and count the number of driveshaft rotations.
This method is far less messy, less time consuming and best of all free. It will give you the approximate gear ratio, and assuming we are talking about stock gearsets, anyone should be able to tell what they have.
One cannot argue though, that although this method's accuracy is solely based on the person, counting the teeth on the pinion/ring gear is the most 100% accurate way. There is just much more involved.
