Changing rear differential axle flanges.
Guys,
I currently have a 9 bolt with shot friction cones. I could spend $1000 rebuilding the limited slip, new bearings and seals, and changing to 3.73 gears. But I'd still be stuck with the modest 9 bolt limited slip. I would like to switch to a helical limited slip like the T2R for a higher bias ratio. That rules out the 9 bolt. I don't want to upgrade to a 12 bolt or 9" for weight reasons, and I can't seem to find a Dana 44. That leaves the 10 bolt.
Car is used for pleasure driving and track days, no drag racing. So I think the 10 bolt will live fine.
My major beef with the 10 bolt is the c-clip axles and problems that causes with pad knock back on fixed calipers. Obviously the 9 bolt has bolt in axles.
My question is, has anyone cut off the 10 bolt axle flanges and replaced with a flange from a bolt in axle differential like the 9 bolt, D44, 9"??? I would imagine this would require custom axles, but I don't see that as a big deal.
Thoughts???
P.S. I am not interested in anyone telling me to just get a 12 bolt/9". Technical discussion only please.

There is a bolt-in conversion kit made for the 10-bolts already if you wanna do that. IIRC, it runs about $150 at Summit/Jegs.

For just a driver & road course, I don't see the need to eliminate the c-clips anyways.

I read that the first time around. Sorry if I tried to help you the first time, but "pad knock" isn't exactly an issue to worry about since there are millions out there every day with no issues.

Look, I know you are trying to help, but it isn't working. I'm not interested in a discussion on why I shouldn't do it. Rather, I want a discussion on "how" to do it. Pad knock back is a known problem with c-clip axles, its really not worth debating.

so whats the difference in length between the 10 an d9 bolt? should be about the same since the wheels all fit the same way right? I dont see any reason why you could not cut the housing ends off a 9 bolt and have the welded to the 10 bolt axle. Obviously you will need this done professionally on a jig to make sure things are square, but i see no issue. If you can do that, you can eliminate the need for custom axles, since you can use 9 bolt ones.
as for stephen, pad knock back will be an issue with fixed calipers (they are not stock BTW). Driving down the street you may not notice much, but start tossing the car around aggressively and you will have problems.

Yeah regarding the axles, I did not know the 10 bolt was also 28 spline. If anyone has a 10 bolt axle laying around, I can take some pictures of my 9 bolt splines and measure the axle lengths, maybe we can compare. If I can make this work with stock axles, this will be quite an inexpensive project.

Took some measurements tonight. I would be very grateful if someone with some 10 bolt axles laying around could compare these numbers.
Passenger axle - 31 1/2" long
Driver axle - 28 7/8" long
Spline outer diameter - 1.2"

To be certain you have 28-spline 10-bolt axles, be sure the donor car is 90+. The 10-bolt axle is 30 5/16" long.

My car has 69k on it. First 50k were babied. I noticed reduced performance about 2k ago. I think I toasted it at the track though. Friction style limited slips get real hot will all the slipping around corners. Hopefully the T2R will be much better.
