Rtv on transmission pan?
Hello all, I was changing out the transmission fluid, and a friend of mine told me I was stupid for not putting a bead of rtv as well as the gasket. I didn't see any trace of rtv when I took the pan off, so I went without. Sure enough, within a week the transmission had leaked out all the fluid. I didn't think it would be necessary to put rtv on such a low torque part.
Did I just jack something up, or is there any truth in using rtv? I used the rubber gasket that came with the filter kit, Or should I use cork?

Re: Rtv on transmission pan?
Is the pan in bad condition??
Did you over tighten the bolts, squeezing out or tearing the gasket?
Check the pan to see if it's cracked. Have a drain plug? Replace the gasket on the bolt or even the bolt if it's striped.
For that much to leak is not a good sign!
I always thought RTV was used just as an aide to hold gaskets in place while the item is being assembled--
--UNLESS there is no gasket being used, like on intakes.

Re: Rtv on transmission pan?
The pan had a dent in it, leaving a crease, but it held fluid, I intended to just replace it as the cost less than twenty dollars, but I cannot find a bolt kit for the life of me. Is there a part number for replacements? I remember one or two being different from the rest.

Re: Rtv on transmission pan?
You dont need RTV.
A good pan, neoprene gasket, and not overtorquing the bolts is all it takes.

Re: Rtv on transmission pan?
I worked for a top name tranny shop has a kid. 15 to 18 years old. in that 3 years. i seen alot of goofy stuff.
the thing that always worked 100% is this.
look at your pan when you take it off. look at the gasket side of the pan holes. see if the are sticking up/pushed up from some knuckel dragger. over tighting them.
place pan on edg of good flat tabel. and with the ball end. of a med size ball pin hammer..tap gently. untill ea bolt hole is flat. take your time you will see. it's easy.. tap on gasket side of pan/inside lip. down.
now this nexed step pays off in 2 ways. the nexed time you want your tranny pan off.. and no leaks!
CORK GASKETS. only (if this is what you have)
now with rubber gloves on ea hand (to keep fingers clean.)
use ULTRA Blue or black. RTV only. dont use just RTV.
and use just enof to turn the gasket the color of the RTV. rubbing it over the gasket. like finger painting.(NOT THICK. just turn it the RTV color) then lay the gasket on the clean pan.
and run the bolts up finger tight. and SNUG THEM UP ONLY. when all bolts are in the pan. snuging them up from inside.out criss cross paturn.
SNUG/TIGHT.
look at gasket when doing this. you will see it start to move/push out. you want the gasket to.just start to move..just a tad bit. not alot..at ea bolt hole.
this will never leak. and the nexed time you take your pan off the gasket comes off in ONE piece!
. this works. 100% when done this way.
and the install job looks good. i use Ultra Blue for the looks. makes a clean Blue looking gasket.
works on paper gaskets also.
