best rearend with a th350 trans?

Got a 87 LT camaro with a old school 350 and th350 trans. I am looking around at local junkyards to get a rearend for it for cheap. Its got the factory 2.73 open diff in it now(hate one wheel peals). Does anyone know if all the v6 3.42 rear ends are open diff or posi trac? Would also like to find the 28 spline axle but what year exactly did they change from 26 to 28 spline.

The motors got around 250-300 hp and going to hook up 100 shot nitrous. Will the v6 rearends handle it? Is 3.42 going to be enough or should I plan on a lower gear? thank you for any advice given for this project.

Re: best rearend with a th350 trans?

The GM diffs went to 28 spline in 1990 so only 90-92 third gens will be the right size. All the fourth gen diffs are 28 spline but are also wider.

There is no V6/V8 diffs. They're all 7.5" 10 bolt diffs but around 1986 the ring gear size was increase to 7-5/8" but it's still considered a 7.5". The only other difference is the gear ratio itself and that depended on the engine/transmission combination in the different models over the third gen series.

Using a TH350, you've have a better gear ratio but no OD. 3.73 gears would be the most popular and if you don't do any highway driving, 4.10 could even be used. With the 26" tall tires, the rpms will be in the 3000 range on the highway.

GM put TH350 transmissions in millions of cars for decades with no problems so an OD isn't really required. The OD just drops your rpms down for highway driving to help fuel economy. A car can still be driven down the highway without OD unless you have deep gears in the diff like 4.56 or deeper and short tires like factory 26" tall.

Put some 3.73 gears in it or put some 4.10 gears with some 27-28" tall tires under the fenders.

Re: best rearend with a th350 trans?

ok. thanks for the info. gotta to get the 28 spline since im doing all this work so a 90-92 camaro is a must. probably get 3.73 in the future but a 3.42 will do for this summer. seen that all v6 camaros came with 3.42 gears in less im wrong.

Does anyone know if v6 camaros have posi(limited slip) or do they all have open diffs.?

The TGO database on the main page has all kinds of information about all the different models throughout the production run. You can see what gear options are available for each model. Just back out of the forums to get to the database.

Re: best rearend with a th350 trans?

Went to the jy and had no luck. They got everything but what I needed. Theirs a guy on craigslist who has a rear end from a 94 camaro with disk brakes, is tore apart, and comes with 4.10 gears. got one email response saying he would take $50 for all of it.

Question is can I put all the internals in my housing? The axles would be to long so i could go to jy to get 90-92 camaro 28 spline axles. Can the disk brakes be swapped?

My tires are already bulging out of the fender a little. I don't want it to look tacky here in mustang town

Also does anyone know if the posi diffs from a 94 are any good? If its a open diff could I slap a cheapo mini spool in it?
