what is this?
i "thought" my T-56 wasnt going into 2nd so i removed the plate infront of the shifter and went thru the gears watching the gate block and it was. im used to a T-5 and the 56 seems to have a bit tighter pattern than my 5.
when i turn the shaft it turns like butter in al 6 gears and rev. no grit, resistance or anything what so ever. so as i was looking down into the case from the shift block at rev gear i seen this.the little chunk sticking out front of the gear.

Re: what is this?
More of a SWAG, but it appears to be the reverse syncro key retainer. Apparently this part gets replaced any time the reverse syncro assembly is apart.

Re: what is this?
Your second picture clearly shows the stamped steel retainer for the keys/struts but I don't know what the other chunk (closer to the camera) is.
Regardless, it needs disassembled for 2nd gear if it's not going in.
I agree with your thoughts on the shift pattern.
