later metal speedo/vss gear setup to earlier plastic gear?

I stupidly changed the fluid in my high mileage 700r4, 80 miles later it lost 3rd and 4th. Now I'm trying to put in a temporary replacement while I save up to properly rebuild my original. I pulled a mystery 700r4 out of a truck at the junkyard where I work (it's a mystery because the truck was swapped from v6 manual to v8 auto. The stamp on the trans says 89, theres no K, and the tail looks like a camaro's to me).

I ran into a problem with this trans that I wasnt expecting. It has a speedo gear/pickup like this plus that sleeve

But I need it to have a plastic gear and no sleeve like this

Can it be changed over? Can I rent a gear puller to get the sleeve and the metal gear off? Should it be easy to have somebody weld on that piece that snapped off the corner while taking the stuck bolt out?

I'd appreciate any advice from anybody who's dealt with this before.

yup, it swaps easy. you could heat the metal ring up and it may slide off. Make sure you put the drive gear clip in the correct hole. There are 2 holes 4 the clip. I hope your VSS still works after you broke popped the upper ring off..

So the part of the output shaft where the gears mount is the same on both? I do see one of the holes for the clip on the replacement trans. Good to know, thanks for the reply. And the metal gear is just pressed on, no hidden clips or anything? I hope a propane torch will work, I dont have the "real" kind.

The sensor was already mangled like that and had fallen apart when I took it out a couple weeks ago while replacing the leaky extension housing seal (the reason for my ill-fated "might as well change the fluid"). It worked fine with no leaks for the day and a half I managed to drive it a week ago, should be fine.
