leaking differential

My differential is leaking gear oil from behind the slip yoke. I replaced the front seal, but it is still leaking. I have read that you can fix this by putting RTV on the outer edge of the pinion splines. Would that work, or should I rebuild the rearend?
Some info about the rear end. My car is an '84, but the rear end is from a 95, both z28's. I know that the '95 is about 2" wider on each side, but all of the threads I read on this site indicate that it should be a direct bolt in. The rearend is in my garage and not under the car, which makes it much easier to work on.
