My 383 killed my T5...time to swap....ADVICE!!!

Hey fellas, I have an 89 Iroc. Last year my 305 took a dump so we dropped in a new 383. Now, almost a year later, my T5 has also taken a dump. It was only a matter of time before the stroker killed it.

I want to get a new tranny that can keep up. Whether I stay with 5 speeds or go to 6, I don't care. I just want something that will bolt directly on, something that can be quickly swapped in with little to no additional mods required.

This is the engine I have: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MLL-BP3832CT1/

What do you guys recommend? Thanks for your time.....

Little to no mods rules out the T56. which is probably the best choice, I think. That leaves a built 700R4 or TH350, both autos. I don't think even a built T5 will live long behind a 383.

You're not going to get anything to bolt directly in other than a T5 with aftermarket gearset and case, which are rated at a power rating that's questionable. So prepare for some little mods to be made and required for the swap.

Read the T56 swap thread that is a sticky at the top of this forum. The whole thing. Click the links in it and read those too. It's a tonne of information but it will help prepare you and answer your questions if you read for content.

Searching for threads w/ TKO in them will give ou some good info as well.

Then, figure out what's important to you. I wanted to be have the same driveline length in two cars, one with a 700-R4, so I wanted a stock length T56 setup with 27 spline yoke. That influenced me heavily. I also love the idea of overdrive and that 6th gear. So I went T56 instead of considering the TKO 5 speeds.

Also, a friend and I worked on a push clutch modification for the LT1 T56 which meant I could run my same cheap T5 style clutch.

I also don't like the adapter plate method used to adapt the TKO and aftermarket T56 to stock type bellhousings. It can work just fine without issue but it's like wheel adapters. More bolts and attachments to fail.

The LT1 T56 is going to work pretty well for you but you should consider the TKO-500 and 600. Look at the gear ratios of all of them. The 600 is going to give slightly closer 1-4 ratios and an overdrive that very closely matches the taller V8 T5 5th gear.

So start reading!
