02 gears in 3rd gen rear end?

i got some gears from a friend out of a 2002 ss camaro.. not sure what size they are.. but i was wondering if the would fit in my 84 rear ens.. or i have a 89 disc break rear end for it also.. will any of these work?.. the 02 is a 6 spd car... mines a 5..or should i just keep the stock gears that came in my 84 Z28?

Re: 02 gears in 3rd gen rear end?

do you have just the gears or the carrier/differential too
'02 likely has the torsen helical gear "posi"carrier,i got
one of those from a damaged '99 z28 axle and plan to
install that carrier into my original '82 axle using '90
28 spline axles.From what i understand,some '89 axle
had the 28 spline too(10 bolt,9 bolt totally different)
The torsen carrier i got had 3.42 gears, but pinion was
not with it so will use my original gears-also 3.42

Re: 02 gears in 3rd gen rear end?

Providing you 89 is a 10 bolt, the gears are considered the same. The third and fourth gen 10 bolt diffs are a 7.5/7.625" The size of the ring gear increased around 1986 to 7-5/8" but it's still called a 7-1/2" diff.

The carrier (posi) will be different. The series may be different depending on the gear ratios. For example, if you're getting 3.73 gears to replace 2.73 then they won't fit on your carrier.

The carrier can be swapped over however the fourth gen carrier will require 28 spline axles. Your only 28 spline axle choices are 90-92 third gen or aftermarket. Fourth gen axles are too long to fit into a third gen diff.
