Rear end after engine upgrade

Is it possible to simply rebuild the rear end to handle more power vs spending 2000 - 3000 + on a complete rear?

I'm looking to up my car to 450 - 500 hp and around 490 torque and want to make sure the rear is up for it when done.

I see all kinds of options for new axles, and gears, and thought that it might be cheaper to just rebuild it.

Thanks for any info.

By the time you buy all the upgrades for the axle you have, you'll be in pretty deep anyway, and still risking breakage. Search around and see if there's anyone who can help you fabricate a torque arm mount for a Ford 8.8" from a Lincoln Town Car. Then your biggest worry is the bolt pattern for the wheels.

Ok, thanks for the input.

I'm redoing the tranny first and won't be getting to the engine and rearend until sometime next year so I'm thinking I'll just change the gears to 3:73 for now so I can have some fun and deal with the rest when I'm ready to get the engine done.

Re: Rear end after engine upgrade

Replace it, I went through 2 rebuilds on my 10 bolt and it needed a 3rd when I finally replaced it w' A Moser 9'', expensive yes, but well worth it. I am pushing 500 @ the flywheel. The 10bolt had a girdle, auburn posi, moser axles and 3:73's w/ Tubular LCA's and a UMI Torque arm. It still would not holdup to abusive driving....
