Transmission Swap issue
Transmission Swap issue
So Recently I replaced the transmission on my 1990 Iroc-Z 305 TPI. I had to go to a pick a part to get a trans. They gave me a trans out of a 1988 Chevy Silverado. Ive only had this car about 4 months and bought it with 121k miles. This is the first auto trans swap ive done, so I apologize for being a newbie.
The Problem:

The Problem:
- The tailhousing was different. So we used the old one off of my old trans.
- Just like ive read. The new trans has a reluctor ring to magnetic for the speedo where as the old trans is gear driven to electric. (I used the speedo that came with the new trans)
- After we installed the transmission. As soon as I went to take it for a test drive and hit the accelerator the car would stall and throw a check engine light. (Obviously its not reading the speedo) Should of known

- I have since disconnected the speedo so I can drive it till I wrap my head around this.
- For obvious reasons the VSS does far more than I thought so my car now runs like crap and throws a check engine light after about 10 min of driving.
- Is the VSS bad and need to be replaced?
- I have the wire harness from the truck it was taken out of. Would I need to wire this into the existing harness to get it to work?
- Is there a conversion VSS for my car for this type of VSS?

Re: Transmission Swap issue
(I used the speedo that came with the new trans)
Put everything out of your own car onto that trans if it's different from what's already there.
Re: Transmission Swap issue
Does anyone know what pulse reading the sensor gives off on a 1988 silverado trans? I thought this would be an easy swap, but apprently im missing something.
Re: Transmission Swap issue
If that's the case, then I would have to remove the press fitting on the output shaft to get it to work. Is that my only option? I don't have the tools as far as I know to get that fitting off.
Does anyone know what pulse rating the trans on a 88 silverado gives? I should be able to buy a new VSS that puts out the required amount to fix this correct?
