t5 clutch issue

Hey guys,

new to this forum just picked up 87 iroc previous owner did a t5 swap in it having some issues if someone call help,

so my mechanic had discovered the position the clutch pedal was put in was causing the master cylinder to leak so he had welded it back to the orginal location, we put in a new clutch and how it won't engage. my mechanics wondering if thats why the clutch pedal was custom put in the car was originally a auto, if anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Re: t5 clutch issue

Here's where you can update your car details and location: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/prof...do=editprofile It's helpful information when asking questions like these.

Attaching pictures of the clutch pedal and of the bellhousing / fork area under the car could only help.

Did the angle of the pushrod cause the leak? Good question. More importantly, did a second master cylinder fail after the first?

Second guessing your mechanic on the internet without pictures isn't the best way to solve a problem judiciously.

That said, sometimes the angle into the master cylinder isn't as bad as it may appear.

Re: t5 clutch issue

What happens is when you press the clutch all the way down the cylinder doesn't press all the way in till the mark ( if I'm making sense )

Re: t5 clutch issue

Thanks for the reply the way the clutch was setup before we had two master cylinders leak out due to the angle they were on

Re: t5 clutch issue

Okay, that's helpful you posted pictures.

There is an 84-92 clutch pedal stud location (closer to the pedal / lower to the ground / more master cylinder movement.)
And there's a 93-02 clutch pedal stud location (higher up / less master cylinder movement.)
The measurement from pivot to stud location is mentioned here in threads. Another tip-off is the 5th bolt location up top in the 4th gen pedal hanger doesn't match the 3rd gen firewall bolthole.

I thnk you had 84-92 pedals, but the stud got moved up a good bit; that's going to reduce master cylinder travel and prevent clutch release. It looks like it was moved up even farther than the 4th gen pedals.

Shimming the master cylinder with a wedge of a nylon material at the firewall outside behind the master would help with the angle and allow the old stud location. And it should be able to be thin enough to not require an adjustable master cylinder pushrod.

It's also possible to go to a larger bore master cylinder (see Tick Performance; don't buy from elsewhere) which would help match less travel with greater fluid movement.

It can be a pain to get the master cylinder location ideal on a swap after someone else did the install. But, it looks like you're nearly there. I'm partial to the lower stud location you had and a shim vs. the new master option. Good luck!
