Tanny and Rear Suggestions Please!!??

Hello everyone-

I'm very new to this site, looking forward to learning a lot!!

I just bought an 87' Z-28, 5.7 TPI, Edelbrock headers, flowmaster exhaust, k&N filter, nothing major.. I bought it mainly because the body is excellent, and it's a hobby for me and my old man... he gets to re-live his old hot rod days!

We are going to be swapping out the motor for a 70' 350, not exactly decided on what the exact specs will be after machine work, etc... but I know we want to be running in the area of 475 to 525hp when all said and done.

Need some direction on which tranny and rear we should look into... We either want a 4speed or 5speed manual, and my pop is leaning toward a 4.11 Posi.

Which trannys should we look at and is the 4.11 a good fit or should we use a 3.73 ?

We mainly will use it to cruise around, open her up here and there, and take it to the track a couple times...

Thank you all for your feedback-

much appreciated.

Lou.

Re: Tanny and Rear Suggestions Please!!??

you can get the HP you are wanting but it may not be a good streetable combination. It would be easier to get closer to there if you stroked it to a 383.
For that kind of power on hard starts racing etc you may have a problem with the rear holding up. Might want to consider stepping up to a 9" or 12 bolt. With 4.11 gears it will not be real good on the highway unless you are running a trans with overdrive.
With that power range I can not necessarily say what would be a good tranny. Obviously the stock T5 will not last but I am not sure how much power the T56 can hold either. The T56 will be fairly close to the 475 figure though.
Hopefully someone else can chime in here.
