9-bolt cone shim material?
I'm rebuilding 9-bolt posi carrier and have figured out the shim thickness I need. I've been looking for appropriate shims and the nearest I've found is Ratech part number 1109. But they only seem to be sold in packs. I only need two. Does it matter what the shim material is? Could I just use a big mild steel washer of the correct thickness? Or cut my own from sheet metal? Or does anyone know where I can buy just two of the correct shims?

They are generally hardened steel washers. There is a lot of friction and pressure on those washers. Just buy the shim kit. Too small a washer and you will be peg legging around, too much and you will be hopping around turns with a locked rear.
Could also try tranny shops, they may have a few extra shims they may just give you. Manual trans and Carrier bearing shims come in many sizes and they may have something of the size you need.
There was once a good read on here somewhere showing what thickness shims to use for what style of driving you do. search around. Ill see if I can find it
