WC t5 Need to swap Speedo
Hey so I read about 10 different threads on swapping the electronic speedo in the WC t5's to a mechanical speedo. I am freakin confused between vss and tooth gear and driven gear and sending units. Im all lost.
So I have a 84 Trans Am, I purchased a 89 World Class t5 and it has two electronic plugs. Question is what are both of them for? I assume the rear one is the speedo. I have the t5 that was originally in my car it's a 85 t5 NWC. Can I simply swap the speedo and gear from the NWC to my WC or do I have to buy an adapter?
Any help would be appreciated just dying to get my car running and would like a speedometer when I first get it running.
I do have both t5's laying out in the garage so I don't have to do it while it's in the car if this does make it ten times easier.

Re: WC t5 Need to swap Speedo
If it's an 89 F-body T5, it'll accept the 84 speedo gear parts.
If it's not, it won't.
Check the speedo drive gear inside to make sure it's the same for ratio purposes.

So I just pull them out of their housings n swap them. Pull the tail housings and check the color of the drive gear on the shaft. If I am lucky they will be the same unlikely tho because this 89 WC t5 was out of a firebird with a 9 bolt rear.

Re: WC t5 Need to swap Speedo
well that worked out perfect thanks guys.
Now I got a new issues. We bolted up the trans today almost, My brother broke a bellhousing trying to draw the trans into the engine. Luckly, I hadn't sold my old trans so we swapped bellhousings and we still are having trouble getting the engine n trans to draw together completely we are about a 1/2 inch from having it all the way in. The spline are all lined up and we can spin it n ****. We don't know how hard we can bang on it because we already broke one bellhousing. Any ideas?

Never try to draw the two together, as you've learned. Try pushing in on the clutch while you maneuver the trans into place.

Re: WC t5 Need to swap Speedo
thanks james. it wasn't my idea to draw it in. My younger brother is more mechanically inclined than me but he comes up with some real dumb a$$ shortcuts that break things.
Sounds like the bushing isn't lined up properly. Should I drop the engine n trans in the car hook up the hydraulics n try it like the one guy says or should I just tip the engine down in the front and pushing the trans downwards ?

Re: WC t5 Need to swap Speedo
Grab the back end of the trans. and push it up and down and left and right. If it slips into the pilot, the trans. will be against the bell.

Re: WC t5 Need to swap Speedo
found one issue though. Where the cross member bolts into it's holes. It seems that two of the holes that are kitty corner from each other are stripped because when I wrench em down they go to tight then one more turn to tighten em down then they pop and they get loose. My dad is thinking we might have to weld a nut into it. Any ideas?
