rear end sound 4.10
I just got my rear end back together and tested it out. When I accelerate the humming sound is heard and is louder the faster I go. When I let off the gas it goes away. What should I be checking for or is this common for 4.10 gears.
I went to a junk yard a while back just looking for small parts. Seen a 82 z28 with no rust,400 smallblock, and some other racing stuff inside the car. Bought the whole thing for 300. popped the rear end cover and revealed the auburn posi and 4.10 gear setup. So I took the whole rear out, painted it and put fresh oil in it. Now its in my car and making noise.

Re: rear end sound 4.10
The auburns really need the auburn additive, this sound is not normal. It sounds like the gears arent set up properly. Did you check the backlash before you installed it in your car?

Performance gears (esp Richmond) are cut a lil diff than stock gears so you will have more noise.
You shouldnt have noise like your saying tho..
Get some marking compound and check the pattern on the drive a coast side.

I just gave it a visual. Had metal in the old oil but not a extreme amount. Ill try to pull the cover off this weekend and check the setup. Was hoping that it would work right off the bat but hey, go figure.

Tear that sucker down if its howling all the time.
Its amazing how LITTLE scoring bearings/races take or metal to have issues with the rearend, vibration noise etc.
Just had my pinion bearings replaced you couldnt see any pitting unless you looked for it but was juuuust enough to make it howl at 63...and a very slight vibration.
if you rebuild put an Eaton posi in they are rebuildable Auburns are throwaway units.
