t5 to t56 ?'s

I have a friend with a 85ish? camaro and a 400hp sbc and a blown stock t5 trans. He wants to go with a new t56 trans. I have been reading and reading these great forums, and It is my understanding that a ls1 t56 would only require a Macleod adapter and extended pilot bearing, and a trans cross member. No cluth, hydrolics, pedals, bell housing ect.. Am I correct? And , where can I buy the needed crossmember, and a new/(rebuilt) ls1 t56? Thanks for any help .

Re: t5 to t56 ?'s

Use of the LS1 version of the t56 and adapter plate puts the shifter too far back in our cars. Which is why everyone uses the LT1 style trans, clutch and flywheel.

I would be willing to find a solution for the shifter location if it meant i could skip the clutch, flywheel, bellhousing, and hydrolic swaps.

Re: t5 to t56 ?'s

There's really no free lunch here. The T-56 shifter already is 2" back from the T-5's. With adapter plate your adding another 2". Now you have to shorten your driveshaft, crossmember now won' t line up to the mount, and don't forget your torque arm will now be too long. And your shifter is now way too far back.
Thos conversion kit's where designed for muscle cars and don't work for our car's. Do a search. This has been attempted multiple times already. $600 for a clutch and flywheel really isn't that bad.

Oh, see I didn't realize it was a total of 4 inches. Everything I read spoke of 2" only. He has an adjustable tq arm and a t56 crossmember already. Im not sure I could overcome 4" though. Thanks for some info I did not have
