Firm 1-2 shift at approx 3800 rpm, soft 2-3 shift then nothing. but yet very odd...
I looked, but none of the other threads seemed to fit my current issues.
When I start the car it idles up to approx 1500 rpm, it will idle down to approx 750-800 rpm and then stay there for the duration.
I can shift into drive or reverse right off the bat and it will engage and move the car. 1-2 upshift is EXTREMELY firm at approx 3500-3800 rpm. 2-3 upshift is very soft and if I give it any throttle more than what I need to maintain my speed it will give me nothing like it's in neutral.
I can pull over to the side of the road and shut the car down, wait a minute or 2 and fire the car up and it will do it all over again.
I was wondering if anyone else has had, seen, or heard this. My car is an 85 z-28, but the trans is from an 87 TA with a 350 tpi 7004.
A little pissed at the car right now...it only has 23k on the car...figured that it would happen from it sitting so much.
BACKGROUND ON CAR = 18vdc is not good for these cars...
I need to go to Missouri in a month and would like to drive it there.
TIA,
Josh

Aside from the transmission going bad (sluggish 2-3 shifts) make sure you TV cable is set up correctly. This will probably have the biggest affect on the transmission.

Couple of guesses based on common 700R4 issues. The hard 1-2 shift is likely due to the 2nd accumulator spring being broken. That one is an easy fix.
The soft 2-3 and lack of pull with more throttle, the 3/4 clutch pack is gone.

Thanks guys...the car was down for a few years because of the transmission going out and not being able to get it changed out. The trans that was put in was out of an 87 TA with a 5.7... kinda figured that it should hold a 305. Got the trans in and got the car moving again. Well the regulator in the alternator went throwing somewhere around 18 vdc through the system...no wiring was fried, but a lot of the electronics were destroyed...IAC, Spark contr. module, entire distributor, injectors, egr control solenoid, egr relay, oh...and the ecm...might actually need that to run the car. So over the last few years the car has sat while systematically replacing parts to get it running.
Kind of a kick in the ***... got the car fired up and running very well...now it looks like the trans is bad again...fml...such is life...well if anyone is interested in an 85 with just under 24k original miles shoot me an offer. Needs paint from the body line up...may get painted in the next week. Also comes with a LT1 from a Police Caprice, complete wiring harness, ecm and complete from oil pan to top of intake has trans as well.
Again thanks for the advice, being a tech myself [heavy equipment], I know it's hard to diag without seeing it. Just a little demotivated with working on the car at this point...I'll probably be back into the car in a week or so... busy with work and other projects, and the wife wants it gone...
Thanks,
Josh

My car seemed to hit the 1-2 upshift a little hard when my 3rd clutch pack was toast. Talk to a transmission guy, the price to patch 3rd may not be as bad as you think. Save even more by taking the trans out yourself.

Had a few minutes to get into it before leaving for work today. Went and reset the TV cable and took it for a drive around the block...not exactly what I call good, but at least it was getting to around 35 mph. Looking for a trans shop, or a new[er] trans to put in now...wife wants it gone since I have too many cars and I'm devoting time to this one...I love it, and hate it...but that's how it goes. She's wanting me to get it gone so we can get a 4th gen...she wants convertable, I want another z-28, but not a convert z car...was thinking about trading it off for a 4th gen to appease her...she's been gracious with the 2nd gen with a 5.7 tpi, the 88 with a ls1 5 spd and 79 928 projects...
Yes, I could get the trans out and get it rebuilt with little time, but I have no time to get into it myself.
Thanks for the ideas and support.
