Junkyard Manual Transmission

Hello All, Does anybody know what type of car/truck i can get a good manual transmission out of at the junkyard? I currently have a 5 speed T5 that isn't doing well paired with my small block 350. I'm looking to spend less than $1,000. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

All I know of is either a T5 from an 80's camaro/firebird, all tho I have been told you can strengthen a T5 for about a grand... I'd look in to rebuilding/enhancing the T5 or save for a T56 swap.

Re: Junkyard Manual Transmission

Dont waste your time spending what a T56 would cost to beef up a T5 to be still weaker than a T56.

Get another F-body T5 and call it a day. They're 200-300 a piece, really not too bad. If you break that one maybe you need to get a T56, but a "350 from a cutlass" shouldn't be too hard on it. And you will definitely need a 83-92 F-body specific T5.

Re: Junkyard Manual Transmission

the t5 needs to be from a f body in factory form. They have a 15 degree offset that's unique to 3rd gens. They do make upgraded internals but the weakness is the case itself. I have seen out there stronger cases, but I believe they are crazy expensive. IMO, you would be better off switching to a six speed for probably the same amount of money it would cost to upgrade the t5 properly.

Yeah I know Gforce transmissions.com rebuilds them, I think they have parts available on jegs or summit. Or you can send it to gforce. I've heard it runs about 900 or so.
