What to look for on a good used T-56

im going to check out a LT-1 T-56 it was rebuilt and has 20k miles on it all else i really need is clutch/slave cylinder plus other small items it even includes pedal asy. and he is letting it go for $900

so my main question is
  • is it good deal or look else where for better deal
  • also what to look for on trans to see if its good besides the obvious visual
thank you

Shift into each gear and spin the input shaft. It should spin the mainshaft. It will be harder to spin in 6th of course.

You can also lift the input if it's set vertically. This will indicate how much endplay was set in the bearings to an extent. If it's obviously got 20 thousandths of movment, it wasn't built correctly 20k ago.

Other than getting inside, that's it.

When twisting the input shaft, first through sixth will spin the output shaft shaft the opposite direction of what it turns in reverse. An out-of-car trans. will be difficult to shift into reverse due to the lockout spring and solenoid but you can push it over firmly.
