Mystery 700R4 (Need Advice)
Mystery 700R4 (Need Advice)
I recently got a 85 z28 camaro with a 700r4. It's a basket case but anyways, the trans shifts EXTREMELY hard and I think it must be from a drag car. The wiring was extremely crappy (one power wire from the starter that went all the way back to the tail lights and powered everything from the fuel pump to the alt. exciter) Anyways, there was a single 12v ign wire run to the 700r4 plug.
What's the best way to tell if the 700r4 has a lockup converter still? If it does, I don't believe it was working when I drove the car home.
The trans shifts EXTREMELY hard and blows the tires off the car on the 1-2 2-3 shift. I'd like something that I can drive without drawing attention from every cop in the neighborhood.
I've done trans work before but it's a different animal with a trans that's had work done to it. Need to establish a plan of attack to make this car street-able (and safe). I'd like to hear some opinions from some guys with experience for the proper course of action.
I'm thinking a full manual reverse valve body, a manual shifter, a TC wiring kit (if I have the right converter). Good idea/ Bad idea? Edit : I guess I could just get a ratchet shifter and leave the automatic function, I don't know, whats your take on the matter?

First check the date code on the case, on the right side, towards the rear of the pan, just above the pan.
