Electric VSS Question

I've been searching for a couple weeks now trying to come up with a solution and I apoligize if I have overlooked the information.

In my 91 Bird I have swapped out the TPI unit for a 383 Carb setup using the same transmission that came out. I'm using the same guages as before. My question is how do I setup the speedometer utilizing the VSS that is on the transmission and using the same speedo in the cluster. I've found the VSS 4 out buffer and also an autometer VSS sensor. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't mind using the VSS buffer if the ECU isn't required. If an ECU is the only option then I'll have to take another approach to my setup up. Thank you.

Re: Electric VSS Question

What I found thus far is the autometer vss will only work with autometer gauges. The next idea I'm approaching is the vss buffer from the TBI fbody vehicles. I have several wiring diagrams and from what I've found there are high and low input from the vss to the buffer. The other 5 wires are pin A is ground; pin C goes to electronic speedometer; pin E goes to the cruise control module; pin F goes to the ECM; pin H goes to the gauges fuse. My question after knowing the wiring diagram; is it necessary to have the ECM? I would assume with the way the buffer seperates the signal and branches to its own module that the use of the ECM signal would merely be used for data on a scan tool or possibly used to operate TCC lock up. Am I missing anything? Any input would be great.

Correct,
The ECM only needs the VSS input for it's operations that are speed dependent like deceleration fueling and TCC engaement
