Clacking when cold accelerating

I have a 1984 camaro z28 HO. If I do not give the car much time to warm up on a cold day and then accelerate I hear a clacking or clanking noise coming from the front of the car. If the car is in park or neutral I can't replicate the sound. So I suspect the noise is coming from the transmission. What would cause this noise to only happen up to the point when the car warms up?
