Locked up!!

I have a little problem I can't figure out. Recently I picked up a 83 z28, 305 carb, auto a few months back and had it towed to my house. Went to push the car in the garage one day thinking I had unlocked the steering column. As I put the car in neutral I heard a pop and the shifter got sloppy. Checked under the car and the shifter linkage cable bolt that holds the linkage to the trans selector lever broke. I'm thinking no big deal, I'll just pick up another bolt when I get the car running. Well after a new gas tank, sending unit, rebuilt carb and a few other parts the car is running great. Hooked up the linkage thinking I'm ready to cruise and the shifter will hardly move from the park position. Nothing is binding up along the gear selector linkage so I decided to open up the center console and take a look. Seems there are two cables that connect to the shifter. The one on the left goes to the trans selector lever and the cable on the right I guess goes to the steering column? It's the cable on the right that will not move and is preventing me from selecting a gear. Any idea what I've done and need to do to fix this issue?

Re: Locked up!!

I believe the key has to be in "run" for the trans. to column cable to move.
I couldn't tell if you had the key in proper position from what you said.

Yes... everything is in working order when the cable is unhooked.

Disconnect the lockout cable from the shifter mechanism
