whats this in my rear end
The other day I bought a rear end for my camaro off craigslist the guy tells me thier is nothing wrong with it. Paid 250 for it its a 3.73 to replace my 2.73. So I start to break it down , open the diff cover and find this 1/4 magnetic washer floating in thier. Can someone tell me what it is? And also find the posi gears are chewed up on the tips. Can you rebuild the gears? And whats the average cost for something like that. Or am I buying a new posi. Will post pics soon.
Thanks jeff
Thanks jeff

Re: whats this in my rear end
That magnet is supposed to be glued to the inside of the rear cover. It must have fallen off and have been bouncing around in there which probably explains the marks on the tips of the gears. From the pic they don't actually look that bad. I might run them as is.

Cool. Take them out, check for any other damage, if none, put new spiders in and you should be good.

How hard is it to change the spider gears? Iv done motor swaps stuff like that but never messed with a rear end before.

Re: whats this in my rear end
Just looked again at this and thought you were talking about the small marks on the edge of the ring gear teeth and then finally noticed the gear inside the carrier with the huge chunk missing. I would not even thing of running that. I did a gear swap using the methods from this thread: https://www.thirdgen.org/forums/tran...axle-gear.html Its not hard, but attention to detail and taking your time is important.

The limited slip above is an Eaton Gov-Loc. Many members would turn their noses up at it and recommend something else. Check the following link for more info:

Re: whats this in my rear end
The Gov Lock is a time bomb anyway. If the governor isn't already broke it will be soon. When that happens it will only spin one wheel just like a standard differential. You have to have a special tool to disassemlbe the Gov Lock, so replacing the gears isn't going to be easy for the average person. I bought the tool about 12 years ago and used it many times, but there are not too many people who want to fool with a broke Gov Lock anymore. I've got a brand new set of those gears for the 8.5 Gov Lock, but I think they are larger than what you have in that 7.5 rear end. I've got boxes full of broken Gov Lock parts. I would recommend using it like it is until it completely breaks and then put in a new Eaton Posi or a Yukon Dura Grip.

Boy this cheap rear end swap just got pricey. I hate people that lie about the stuff they sell!

RIght; that's a Gov-Bomb, Grenade-Lock, whatever you want to call it. The ultimate garbage.
The way it works is, it's an open diff, until the RPM difference between the 2 axles exceeds roughly 150 RPM; then at that point, it LOCKS UP suddenly with a bang. Understand fully: NO POSI ACTION WHATSOEVER occurs until AFTER one wheel starts spinning, at which point it LOCKS UP. Works OK in the applications it was designed for, which were, underpowered trucks (military, specifically) in STRICTLY off-road situations; but behind a motor with some power and in front of tires with some traction, it DOESN'T STAND A CHANCE. There used to be a pic somewhere on this site a decade or 2 ago where somebody had one of those that exploded, and the shrapnel went THROUGH THE COVER AND INTO THE GAS TANK. That's how BIG they go BOOM.
Visit the S-10 or Chevy full-size truck sites to find out how the people who get stuck with those stock, feel about em. I can assure you, they're not popular.
So drive it carefully, more carefully than you would an open rear end, and it might last for a bit; race it, or dump the clutch or whatever, and it will surely die a spectacular death.
I don't know where to get the small gear kit for em, but it doesn't matter too much, just drive it til it explodes, and get something real at that time. Just hope it doesn't trash your gears when it gives up the ghost. But even then, those are only about $200, so no huge loss regardless.
Next time, post here BEFORE you make a huge purchasing mistake, not AFTER.

How do you guys feel about this? 911A319 Detroit Truetrac Limited Slip GM 7.5"i found it for $383.99

Re: whats this in my rear end
Nothing wrong with the Truetrac. It works well for auto cross and road racing. Not the best for drag racing, but it will do. Be sure that it has the correct splines and the right series for what you need. You don't need to spend more money on something else that you can't use.

Re: whats this in my rear end
The car is not a drag car. Not even a weekend driver maybe once or twice a month cruiser. I much rather ride my 2012 honda cbr 1000rr. It will still lock up both wheels on a burnout right? And is that a good price?

Re: whats this in my rear end
What part of "no posi action whatsoever until the RPM difference between the wheels exceeds about 150 RPM, at which point it locks up with a bang" needs further explanation?
About THE LAST THING anybody with one of those things needs to be doing, is burnouts.
It'll work fine for just driving around, but if you abuse it like that, expect it to fail SPECTACULARLY. I assume you have already checked out the truck forums and seen all the pictures of ones that self-destructed? That's what you'll get.
I would not pay ONE CENT for one of those. In fact, last one I got (for free), I gave away, to a S truck owner. It has a chance of lasting longer behind a no-power 6-cyl. Sorry, I can't justify your already-water-under-the-bridge mistake for you. It's a "live and learn" opportunity.

Thats just how sofa is. He (assuming he is a he?) gives his opinion very bluntly and speaks the truth. I don't think its anything personal. I quite enjoy posts like this actually.

Re: whats this in my rear end
Sorry I thought you were still stuck on trying to get somebody to open a crack in the door of reality and let in the idea that somehow buying that Gov-Lock would have been "OK"... few things get more annoying than someone who makes a mistake and then want to badger the rest of us into helping them in their denial. But if you've already finished the denial and the mourning stages of the grief process and moved on to fixing it, then that's a whole other matter. I apologize.
Yeah that's one of the downfalls of the Gov-Lock... the Powertrax or the like won't fit in it, gotta start out with a regular open carrier for those. At which point, they're no longer quite so cost-effective, if you gotta go out and get a carrier PLUS the other.
I'm always having a bad day, especially Monday - Friday.

Re: whats this in my rear end
If it's not going to be drag raced then I would not put the Detroit Locker on the list of options. Those are great for serious street/strip cars, but not the most fun on the street for something that is just a cruiser. The Yukon Dura Grip would be much better for that. It's a little cheaper than the Eaton Posi, but still works exactly the same way.
