Ive read multiple forums, all say auburn posi units are NOT rebuildable. Why does jegs offer kits to "service" them? They say clutches are machined to fit the case they're made for. Am I missing something? Or are they for non stock/ gm oem units?

Re: Auburn posi

The only service kits that I have ever seen for the Auburn are the cross shaft, pinion gears and springs. I have never seen replacement cones for them.

Iunno...

If you call Auburn, they'll tell you straight up, that past about 4 yrs old, they don't offer the parts to work on them.

Yeah, about the only "rebuild" deal you can really get from Auburn is if you buy a brand new, aftermarket replacement one, they have an exchange deal where you pay a certain amount and they'll send you another brand new carrier. Still a crap deal though. The Eaton posi, while expensive, is FAR superior since they're fully rebuildable, and the replacement clutches aren't too expensive. The other good option is a 98-up, factory Torsen carrier. Torsens have helical gears instead of clutch plates, so there's nothing to wear out. If you have a 90-92 rear, you'll already have the 28 spline axles required for a Torsen. Early 1989 and older rears have 26 spline axles, so if you have a rear of that vintage, you'd need to scrounge up a set of 90-92, 28 spline axles. The nice thing about Torsens is you can commonly find good, used ones on ebay for $100-$150.
