mercon v in th350?

hey guys, i just put in a new converter(higher stall about 2800) and a shift kit in my th350 (came form a 76 Malibu) i installed it in my 82 bird and am about to fill it up with fluid. i have a full case of mercon v fluid sitting under the work bench(i work at ford and have managed to collect a pile of it) now i have done a bunch of reading and i keep finding ppl saying to use dex3/mercon..... since mercon v is backwards compatible with mercon could i use it in my th350? has anyone tried this before? any help/suggestions is appreciated.

Pretty well all ATF is backwards compatible. The newest stuff available should have no problems working in older transmissions. If the transmission is old enough, the dipstick probably says to use Dexron II. That's not even made any more.

i have heard of shops switching trucks from mercon TO dexron . dexron they say has a higher boiling point . i'm not sure about the boiling point stuff . i would go ahead use what you have . good luck .

Re: mercon v in th350?

thanks for the input guys, i do have another simple question though. i bought a lokar dipstick but its way to short, it barely reaches the back of the rh cylinder head, im wondering will any th350 factory type dipstick work? or should i buy a longer braided/flexible type? thanks

Re: mercon v in th350?

As long as it's for a Chev engine. A TH350 on a Pontiac, Buick etc may have the retaining tab in a different position because of the different bellhousing bolt patterns.

There's 2 different seals for the tube depending on the size of the tube. If you grab a junkyard tube, make sure you get the seal at the bottom just to be safe.

The Lokar braided tubes look nice on a street rod or dragster where it's visible. On a typical production car, it's a waste of money.
