Dana 44 re-release?
I contacted Spicer corp: "I'm wanting to contact Dana about the possibility of re-releasing the Dana 44 with the cast-in torque-arm provision for the '82-'02 Camaro / Firebird. Demand now is far higher than it was back in '92, both for the greater number of higher-powered cars, and because of the cost of alternatives such as the application-specific 12-bolt from Strange Engineering, which has the further disadvantage of not being a period-correct upgrade. I imagine the first step is inquiring if Dana Axle still has the old molds, or at least the old blueprints. Any information / links / contacts you could provide will be appreciated." Just today received this: "In order to consider, we would need a commitment of 500+ per year from a current distributor."

Good luck with that. Moser doesnt sell that many rearends in a year of all flavors. There are more high power 3rd gens now than in 92, but the total number of 3rd gens on the road is a mere fraction of what it was in 92 too

I doubt it would be available for much less than the current aftermarket choices and the aftermarket choices are a stronger alternative.

Re: Dana 44 re-release?
What's the cheeeeeepest rear end I can get for the twin-turbo 900 HP big block with a 300 shot that I'm going to build next week?
Oh by the way I need brakes but I can't afford a set of pads. So don't any of you guys that are made of money tell me to just go to the store and buy em, I need em cheeeeeeeper than that.

Re: Dana 44 re-release?
I was just curious. I'm not one to speculate without investigating, and I thought a few other people might be curious about such an idea. Where Dana went wrong before was forcing assemblies on us, in ratios they chose. Choices were 3.31:1, 3.54:1, 3.92:1 or 4.09:1. Plus they wouldn't let you buy it in installments. Strange should learn from this. I'd prefer to buy a bare housing for around $450, then go to the aftermarket for some 2.72:1 gears. The real issue is GM not using this in the '93-up V8 / T56 cars, because GM was using Dana 60s in the big C2500 vans. But this can't be fixed now. I inquired about buying the casting molds, Dana Axle is not willing to sell them at any price.
