Reverse Problems

Okay so I've had my 91 Camaro for about 8 months. I don't have too many problems with it. My biggest concern is the transmission. Whenever I put it into revers my whole car just starts vibrating. I have no clue as to what could be causing this. Also the reverse doesn't even kick in sometimes, so sometimes I sit there like an idiot waiting for the reverse to kick in. Could it be transmission mount? It is an automatic on a v6.
Any ideas?

Re: Reverse Problems

You may want to check your transmission shifter linkage cable; if this is misadjusted you may not be fully engaging the gear select piston into the reverse position. As far as the shaking goes, is your idle going way down when you shif into reverse (lower than it goes in drive)? This would indicate an additional load on the engine, which could be caused if there is a blockage in the valves or hydrolics of the transmission, creating extra load on the ATF pump. Another thing to check is your engine mounts, transmission mounts, suspension bushings and such, these can cause the torque from going into reverse to act in a way that it does not exibit in the foward gears.

Re: Reverse Problems

Oh alright I will check that out. I wish I could answer your question about its idle, but I can't read the tach because it doesn't work.. But I'll listen to it tomorrow to see if it sounds lower. When I shift into either drive or reverse(when it wants to work) my car kind of jumps like a torque thrust.
